1 The next day there was a wedding celebration in the
village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his
disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran
out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more
wine.” 4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time
has not yet come.” 5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he
tells you.”
John 2:1-5 NLT
When we think about this miracle we
usually think about Jesus turning the water into wine. This miracle to me is a miracle of time as
God every day turns the rain into grapes and then the grapes become wine.
But what I think is often missed is
Jesus telling Mary “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,”.
Jesus referring to His mother as dear woman is interesting but
even more is the statement that this is not OUR problem. Jesus recognizes the authority of His mother.
And then Jesus continues explaining
by stating “My time has not yet come.”
Many times in the Gospels the reference to “My time” would usually mean
that it was not time for Jesus to die for our redemption.
Why is the idea of “My time” used
here? I wonder if Jesus was not referring
to the wine which He later would use in the Last Supper as a symbol of His crucifixion.
Could Jesus not want to confuse the
idea of wine with a miracle rather than of sacrifice?
Turning the water into wine at a
wedding does remind us we are the Bride of Christ and we celebrate our new
life!
While we cannot know for sure it reminds
us there is more to this miracle than just making wine.
God is so good and even in the bad
days I experience not only the joy of God’s presence but the blessing of my
family. Every day I pray for my sister
Robin as she struggles with her stage 4 COPD.
It is ironic that she and I got Social Security in the same year.
