“In the
beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and
empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and
there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light
from the darkness. God called the light "day", and the darkness he
called "night". And there was evening, and there was morning—the
first day.” (Genesis 1:1-5 NIV)
“In the beginning God”. Before anything was created the Creator was
and since God created time and light we know God lives beyond time and beyond
creation.
What is amazing is that God created
light before creating the stars, sun and moon.
This light God declared “good” and separated the light from
the darkness. This leaves the question
of why does God refer to them as “the light” and “the darkness”?
Here we are in the Creation of God
which has been corrupted by our sin and we constantly live with the
consequences of our sin! Broken relationships, sickness, corruption, murder,
slavery, destructive sexual practices and the depression that seems to be a
contagious disease are the result of our sin and selfishness.
It is interesting to me to look at
the word selfishness and understand that selfish is being too centered on our
self. Because of selfishness we come to
actually blame God for the trouble in our lives even though they are the result
of our own sin or our corporate sin!
We must humble ourselves and admit
that even in judgment we are responsible for the suffering God brings upon us
and come to God asking for His grace (undeserved goodness) to help bring
healing in our lives, families and communities.
