“Now the
multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did
anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all
things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was
there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or
houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and
laid them at the apostles’
feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.” (Acts 4:32-35 NKJV)
The new Church was finding its way
as they sought to travel God’s Way. At
this time they called themselves The Way because they believed Jesus was the
only way to salvation and to God. These
few believers were the ones who would bring the message of Jesus to the world
that is broken and living in darkness and desperately need hope.
Their unity was complete and their
unity with God was the source of their unity.
Their unity was such they shared everything with one another and no one
lacked anything. More than just having
things they had the love of God and also of one another.
As people brought the money from
selling their land or house they brought the money “and laid them at
the apostles’ feet”. This phrase tells us that the apostles were not
only the spiritual leaders but also the financial leaders.
Being from our time we might not understand but by
selling their homes and houses they were selling their heritage and their
family lands that should go to their children.
But they discovered and treasured a new heritage and a new family which
they sought to support.
We who have experienced grace should be moved to share
grace with others who need the love of God and the unity and support of God’s
Church. For grace to live and grow in
our lives it must flow from us like a stream bringing life to a dry and thirsty
soul.
Do you support those in need around you? Is your home, car and money more important to
you than the situation of others? As you
have received grace do you pass grace to others?
Today was filled with
pain and weariness. My side for the last
few days has gone from feeling like I was being punched to feeling like I am
being kicked. Every time this happens
afterwards I lose my breath for a minute.
But I was able to fix supper as Bonnie and Rebecca worked so hard
today. Jonathan came by for supper and
we had another birthday celebration for Rebecca. Her birthday reminds us of the wonderful gift
from God she is!
