“For the
love of money is a root of all kinds
of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness,
and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1Timothy 6:10 NKJV)
How many times have you heard that money is the root of
all evil? We want to put the blame on an
inanimate object rather than on ourselves.
Like Adam and Eve we want to pass on the blame to either someone or
something else.
Paul puts the blame where it belongs – on us! It is not money but it is our love for money
that outweighs our love for God. To love
anything more than God is to make it an idol and worship it rather than God.
Though we may struggle against idols for all of life the
best option is to struggle because the other option is to give into it! Then we are left worshipping something that
will not only not fulfill us but in the end let us down. In truth our idol will destroy us in this
life and in eternity.
Paul says that our love for money makes us greedy and in
the end that will cause us to stray for the faith. Greed can cause us to trade a loving and
creating God for something that was created!
We celebrate the creation rather than the Creator!
Listen to the warning from God which says they will have “pierced
themselves through with many sorrows.” We
trade off the God who was pierced for our sorrows to being pierced by our
sorrows! Where Jesus paid for our
sorrows and sin we trade it for adding to the bill of our sorrows.
Will you follow Jesus who was pierced for your sorrows or
will you be pierced for your sorrows?
Will you trade the Creator for the creation? Just how much is your eternal soul worth to you?
