“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24 NKJV)

This command must be for future generations since Adam and Eve did not have human parents. In Adam and Eve we are shown the proper way for marriage to take place. There are three main lessons in this verse.

1. Marriage is to be a man and a woman coming together. Three the example is shown to be between a male and a female. A man and a woman as well as father and mother. In Creation God also revealed this in that a male and female were created in God’s image. Only as male and female can humans express the image of God.

2. Marriage is a new relationship that supersedes all others. God teaches the husband and wife must leave their father and mother. The word leave means to set loose from and is a continuing action.

3. In marriage the two become one flesh. They are united physically, emotionally and spiritually. Only in coming together can they be the image of God as they create – a new family life as they have children and a community joining with extended family.
