They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?”” (John 8:33 NKJV)
What an ironic and ‘uninformed’ statement for any Jew to make. We could use:
The time of bondage in Egypt
Several times of bondage during the time of the Judges
Bondage to the Philistines during the time of the kings
Exiled from the entire Holy Land
In bondage under the king Alexander appointed
And currently under bondage to Rome
This is not an exhaustive list but this history should be well known to any Jew and the Passover celebration is a remembrance of their bondage in Egypt and God’s liberation.
But Jesus is not talking about that kind of bondage or that kind of freedom. Jesus is declaring He is the way out of bondage to sin so we can be free!
