“4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.” (Luke 2:4-5 NKJV)

God is able to use a Roman edict to work His will so the Son of God, who would be the king of Israel as the son of David, was born in the town of Bethlehem. Bethlehem means house of bread and this is where the Bread of Life would be born. Joseph and Mary would make the harder journey as the father and mother of the Son of God.
